As Tammy Abraham’s struggle at Swansea City continue, the striker and Chelsea will be reflecting on what lies ahead for the talented goalscorer.
There is one straightforward solution which benefits all parties; a loan move to Celtic next season.
The situation
Abraham was loaned out by Chelsea this season to Premier League strugglers Swansea City.
He scored 26 goals in all competitions for Bristol City in the Championship last season and the Blues wanted him to make the next step.
So far it hasn’t happened. He has not scored since November, the same month he was capped by England for the first time.
Promotion to Chelsea’s first team next season looks unlikely based on his record this year, and he needs another loan.
A move to the Championship would be a backwards step, while joining another Premier League side could turn out to be a repeat of this season’s struggle.
Celtic would be an ideal halfway house, and allow Abraham to join a title challenging team and even play Champions League football.
Celtic’s perspective
A loan move for Abraham is a no lose situation for Celtic.
They hung on to Moussa Dembele in the January transfer window and a replacement will be needed if he is sold in the summer.
Signing Abraham on loan would mean Celtic can take their time over signing a permanent successor and also put them in pole position to sign him permanently.
He would arguably be an upgrade on current loanee Odsonne Edouard and negate Celtic’s need to pay up to sign him this summer.
The most compelling reason
Signing Tammy Abraham would allow Celtic the chance to reunite him with winger Charly Musonda.
Musonda is on an 18 month loan from Chelsea and he has spent years playing with Abraham at youth level.
The duo could help transform Celtic’s attack, and their link up could pay dividends for Chelsea for their return for the 2019/20 season.
This could be a move which allows Abraham, Celtic and Chelsea to all benefit.
