Tammy Abraham almost departed midway through the season to join Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves were strongly interested in Abraham in January, but could not quite get a deal over the line for the Chelsea striker.
Abraham ended up staying with Villa in the end, and the striker went on to help fire Dean Smith’s side into the Premier League.
Villa won the play off final yesterday to ensure that they got back to the top flight.
And Abraham admits that he is glad that he didn’t leave Villa Park to join Wolves midway through the season now.
“It looked like I was going to Wolves,” he said. “I think certain situations happened with the FA, something about playing for three teams in one year or something like that… but the coach spoke to me he said: ‘Listen, stay here, we believe in you, the boys believe in you, the fans believe in you and we’ll get promoted’. I am glad I did.
“It wasn’t my first choice to come to the Championship, but I don’t look back on it (badly). It has been a fantastic year for me and the boys as well, and to clinch it off we got promoted.”
Villa are now said to be interested in making Abraham’s move permanent for £25 million (Guardian). Whether Wolves will return for him remains to be seen.
Chelsea are under a transfer embargo, so it is not yet clear whether they will be open to offloading Abraham this summer.
