Aston Villa have been building up to their Midlands clash against West Brom by looking back on the last time both teams met in May 2019.

On that day, Villa beat West Brom in the Championship play-off semi-finals on penalties and they then went onto seal promotion back to the promised land by beating Derby at Wembley.

Two players who were heroes on that evening at the Hawthorns were Tammy Abraham, who scored the decisive penalty, and Jed Steer in between the sticks.

To build-up to today’s game, Villa posted the following clip from that pitch, with Abraham simply responding in the comments section by saying ‘love it’.

Ex-Villa left-back, Stephen Warnock, also responded by saying ‘Why haven’t I seen this before?’.

That image of Steer staring down Mason Holgate as he is walking to the penalty spot before then going onto save his penalty is a moment that will live long in the memory of Villa fans.

A lot of the Villa players that were there on that night are still playing for the club today – John McGinn, Grealish, Anwar El Ghazi, Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause, Steer, Ahmed Elmohamady, Conor Hourihane, Neil Taylor and Keinan Davis.

It says a lot about the job Dean Smith has done that he has still kept intact a large proportion of that promotion-winning squad, with every single one of those players featuring this season.
