Aston Villa will be hoping to secure a play-off spot at the end of the Championship season.
Tammy Abraham has astonishingly claimed that Aston Villa are still ‘chasing the top two’ in the race for promotion to the Premier League. At this moment in time, Norwich lead the way, with Sheffield United sitting in second and Leeds United closely followed in third.
But Dean Smith’s side are 17 points behind Chris Wilder’s side with only eight games of the season remaining, which certainly rules them out of catching the top-two.
Speaking to Sky Sports News (19/03/2019 at 10:45 am), Abraham was still confident that Villa can secure promotion to the Premier League, but the manner in which he felt they can do it is perhaps a little ambitious.
“Things are falling into place for us,” Abraham told Sky Sports News. “A lot of injuries, a lot of changes to the team and obviously a new manager as well.
“Everyone [is now] coming back gradually. The teams performing, we are getting wins, so hopefully chasing that top two and if we don’t get that two then we’re chasing top six.
“From that start of the season, I have always believed even though the results weren’t going our way, I came here to do two things. Score goals & hopefully get Aston Villa promoted.”
A month ago, Villa’s hopes of finishing in the play-off places were well and truly over after defeats to West Brom and Brentford.
But since the return of Jack Grealish at the start of the month, things have changed in the most dramatic fashion as they have won four games on the bounce.
As a result of those points, the Midlands side now sit in sixth place and they will be well aware that more positive results will only increase their chances of maintaining their current position.
After the international break, Villa will host Blackburn Rovers on home soil before travelling to Yorkshire to take on their former manager Steve Bruce at Sheffield Wednesday.
