Tony Cascarino has urged Mesut Ozil to leave Arsenal and was seemingly left baffled after Tony Adams compared him to Dennis Bergkamp stating that he is a ‘million miles away’ from the Dutchman, as he told TalkSport (15/08/20 at 10:25 am).
It has been well-documented that Ozil’s future at Arsenal looks pretty bleak and Mikel Arteta’s decision to hardly play him after the restart was proof of that.
But the German World Cup winner, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in June 2021, has made it clear that he will see through ‘to the last day’ of his contract, as he told The Athletic.
Former Republic of Ireland striker, Cascarino, compared Ozil’s situation to Bale’s and reacted to Adams comparison that the playmaker is like Highbury legend, Bergkamp.
“No, I don’t like it,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “I don’t like it at all. It’s because when I hear comments ‘he loves this club and he would love to stay the last day of his contract’.
“If you are not playing, you’re early 30’s, World Cup winner and achieved quite a lot at a club like Real Madrid and at Arsenal. And you’re not in the team, the manager quite clearly is not wanting you to be a part of the next season or two seasons, he’s not wanting you and picking you. So, there is obviously something seriously wrong.
“If he loves Arsenal that much, and he knows the manager, and that he’s not wanted by him, then you should be wanting to leave the club. Just go and do a deal – He has to be prepared to lose money. It’s a bit like Gareth Bale. If you’re going to make your career decisions just based on money. I find that really strange.
“Tony [Adams] is saying there he is the cherry on the cake. I think that cherry is not a very polished cherry if you like – comparing him to Dennis Bergkamp is a million miles away. Bergkamp looked after himself on the pitch and he had a hunger and a desire.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Ozil is still donning the Arsenal shirt next season and it seems the saga involving him will rumble on.
The new season begins in September, with the summer transfer window slamming shut in October, so it will be interesting to see how much he features during that period.
Given that Arteta has won the FA Cup in his first season in charge at Arsenal, and he seemingly has made his feelings clear towards Ozil, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the supporters back the manager rather than the player going forward.
