Tony Cascarino has stated in The Times that he does not think that Timo Werner will be a regular starter for Liverpool.
The former Chelsea striker, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, does not believe that Werner is among the best players in the world technically.
While Cascarino has suggested that Liverpool’s playing style will suit the RB Leipzig striker, he does not see the Germany international start week in and week out ahead of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
According to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old winger wants to join Liverpool in the summer transfer window, with the Merseyside outfit also interested in securing his services.
Cascarino wrote about Werner in The Times: “He scores an incredible amount of goals and yet is not at the top table, technically. I have seen Werner likened to Fernando Torres and Luis Suárez, but he can’t do what they could.
“He’s not going to wriggle past a defender or produce a moment of brilliance. There aren’t many who can. But because he’s so direct, because he’s constantly on the move and getting into danger areas, he keeps finding the net.”
Cascarino added: “If he were to leave RB Leipzig it would need to be for a club similar to the style of Nagelsmann’s team. In the Premier League, that’s Liverpool.
“They are the team who get three or four players into advanced attacking positions in every move. But I can’t see him forcing his way into the starting line-up ahead of Salah, Sadio Mané or Roberto Firmino.
“Unless Jürgen Klopp is going to do what Sir Alex Ferguson did with Manchester United in 1999 and have four great strikers, then Werner is not going to want to be in and out of the team. He ticks a lot of boxes, he’s a top player in many ways, but you have to have the right system for him.”
Stats
According to WhoScored, Werner has made 26 starts and one substitute appearance in the Bundesliga for Leipzig so far this season, scoring 24 goals and providing seven assists in the process.
During the 2018-19 campaign, the German striker scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 30 league matches for Leipzig, according to WhoScored.
Amid the economic uncertainty caused by the global health crisis, it remains to be seen if clubs spend big money on new players this summer.
