Dean Ashton admired Tyrone Mings for his ‘old school’ defending as Aston Villa beat Newcastle United. The defender helped Unai Emery’s team to a 3-0 win on Saturday.
Aston Villa strengthened their hopes of qualifying for a European competition with a strong display at both ends against Newcastle. Jacob Ramsey’s (11’) early goal gave the Villans a perfect start before a brace by Ollie Watkins (64’, 83’) put the home team clear of the Toon.
Newcastle threatened to stop Aston Villa from also getting a clean sheet but Mings and Ezri Konsa stood firm. Mings, particularly, had to react well to deny Miguel Almiron right before Watkins got his second goal. The Paraguayan only had the centre-half to beat to fire home.

Tyrone Mings was quick to thwart Newcastle during Aston Villa’s win
The Magpies worked the ball to Almiron free inside Emiliano Martinez’s penalty area in the 74th minute. But Mings was quick to throw his body in the way and thwart the forward. He showed great awareness all game long whenever Kieran Trippier’s crosses posed a threat.
Jacob Murphy also threatened to cause the Villans problems from the flank. But Mings had an answer for much of the Magpies’ efforts to probe Martinez’s area. He had also blocked an earlier effort from Murphy before the break to ensure Emery’s men led 1-0 at the break.

What has Dean Ashton said about Tyrone Mings’ display on Saturday?
Mings impressed Ashton with his display on Saturday to see Aston Villa beat Newcastle 3-0. The £20m transfer from AFC Bournemouth in July 2019 played a crucial role in helping the Villans claim their fifth consecutive win in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.
“Mings is there again,” Ashton said on talkSPORT (15/04, 14:06). “Him and Konsa have been great. It’s a good ball to Almiron and it’s a good touch and strike. But that’s exactly what you’ve got to do as a defender. Old school defending from Tyrone Mings.”
Emery clearly also values what Mings offers Aston Villa and would have revelled in his work against Newcastle. The Spaniard has only been without the 17-cap England enforcer in one top-flight fixture since replacing Steven Gerrard in November when ruled out due to injury.
