Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed the new Aston Villa manager.
Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur defender Jason Cundy suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (broadcast from 6am, June 3) that Roberto Di Matteo may not be a good managerial appointment for Aston Villa.
Di Matteo has been appointed the new Villa manager with Steve Clarke coming in as his assistant.
The former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion boss succeeds Remi Garde, who parted company with the Villans in March.
The Italian won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 and also guided West Brom to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in 2010.
Former Chelsea and Tottenham defender Cundy rates Di Matteo as a manager, but he has raised doubts on whether he knows the Championship well enough despite having managed in the division during the 2009-10 season.
“I like Robbie,” said Cundy on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (broadcast from 6am, June 3).
“I think Robbie has been a brilliant manager for Chelsea. It’s a totally different animal this, Villa, and I think they needed and need a manager that knows that league.
“I know he has managed there for West Brom. Steve Clarke is a smart move. Steve is an excellent coach.”
Di Matteo may not have extensive managerial experience of the Championship, but he knows English football inside out and Villa fans should be optimistic about next season.
The Italian did quite well at Chelsea and West Brom, and he could prove to be a very good managerial appointment for the Villans.
