Paul Merson has urged Joe Gomez to stay at Liverpool beyond this summer, as he told Sportskeeda.
The TV pundit shared that Gomez is a player that has been ‘talked about a lot’ and the Liverpool defender ‘won’t be short of suitors’ during the summer transfer window.
Following his return from a long-term injury, the 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order on Merseyside and is now the fourth choice under Jurgen Klopp.
The obvious of Virgil van Dijk stands above them all, but Joel Matip is the one who charges from the backline alongside the ice-cool Dutchman.
Whilst summer signing Ibrahima Konate is bulldozing his way through quality performance after quality performance when picked.
Despite Gomez’s minutes being limited, Merson still thinks he should stay put and shared that he is playing for a ‘really successful’ team.
“Joe Gomez is another player who has been talked about a lot in recent weeks,” said Merson. “With his lack of game time an obvious issue at the moment.
“He won’t be short of suitors and the decision will ultimately be his at the end of the season, but I do think he should stay at Liverpool.
“They are a really successful team and will compete on all fronts next season, so he will play enough games.”

There are suggestions that the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa want to sign Gomez when the summer transfer re-opens, according to The Athletic.
First thing is first, if Gomez does leave Liverpool, wherever he ends up, it’s going to be a stepdown from the club he is at anyway.
This is a case of can he earn regular starts? And will those regular starts provide him with a chance of returning to the England squad ahead of the World Cup? The answer is probably no.
That’s why Gomez needs to leave the Reds, either on a loan deal or on a permanent basis, as the richest club in world football, Newcastle, if they stay up, would be a very good fit.
As would be joining European-chasing Aston Villa, who have an Anfield legend in their dugout in Steven Gerrard.
