Lee Dixon has pointed the finger of blame at Clement Lenglet for the second goal that Tottenham Hotspur conceded against Newcastle United this evening.

Spurs went into the break 2-0 behind in North London following a farcical opening 45 minutes.

First, Hugo Lloris was lobbed by Callum Wilson after racing off his line to clear a ball that he wound up trying to control.

Shortly before the break, Miguel Almiron then added a second and the France international was again complicit for Tottenham, with his floated pass cut out by the Newcastle maestro.

But Dixon has questioned Lenglet’s defending for that particular goal, with Almiron effortlessly breezing past the star who the Lilywhites signed from Barcelona on a season-long loan this past summer.

He told Optus Sport [23/10, 5:26]: “Lenglet, if you’re standing still when a player’s running at you at pace, you might as well take yourself off the pitch. You’ve got no chance at catching him there. It’s a comedy of errors.”

There’s a reason why Antonio Conte has used the Frenchman rather sparingly in the Premier League this season and it’s probably because he isn’t completely convinced by him yet.

This was only the Barca loanee’s fourth start in this competition since joining Tottenham and there are definitely question marks over him.

Ben Davies was benched by the Italian manager and in hindsight, perhaps that was the wrong decision to use Lenglet instead.
