Should Tottenham Hotspur take the money and sell Eric Dier?

Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier is claimed to be a priority signing for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, The Sun report.

Despite difficulties in dealings between the two clubs, and Mourinho and Levy’s past history, the Red Devils are hopeful a £40 million deal can be agreed.

This would represent a staggering profit for Spurs on the £4 million they paid to sign Dier in 2014, when they bought him from Sporting Lisbon.

Dier has the capability to play in central defence and central midfield, and it is the latter where United want him, to replace Michael Carrick who they signed 10 years ago from Spurs for £18 million.

The difference at that time was that United were competing for the title, and Tottenham were simply also rans.

Now Spurs are bidding for the second consecutive season to finish above Manchester United in the Premier League table, and secure a top four place potentially at their expense.

Last summer the prospect of selling Dier was unthinkable, but his star has begun to wane slightly this campaign, with Victor Wanyama taking his place in central midfield.

This has led to some uninspiring performances in central defence, certainly not ones which represent a £40 million player.

The result is a very split reaction from fans regarding a £40 million bid for Dier’s services, with some calling for Spurs to take the money.

Here is a look at the reaction on Twitter…

People wanted Dier to be dropped from the starting XI and now they don’t want him sold for 40m+. Make your mind up! #thfc https://t.co/ZlWGGGumYo
