Harry Redknapp joked that West Ham will ‘take the beating’ after he helped draw West Ham against Manchester City in the League Cup fourth-round, on Sky Sports (22/09/21 at 10:10 pm).
After the Hammers beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, both Redknapp and Micah Richards were in charge of doing the draw for the next round.
And given Redknapp’s affiliation with West Ham and Richards with Man City, it just had to be that they both pulled out their respective teams from the hat to play one another.
After knocking out one Manchester club, David Moyes’ side are now tasked with trying to beat a team that is vying to win the League Cup for the fifth time on the bounce.
But they will have the London Stadium crowd to provide them with that extra push, and possibly the return of their all-action forward, Michail Antonio.
This is what Redknapp had to say about West Ham’s win at Old Trafford, and then his reaction to pulling West Ham out of the hat for their EFL Cup draw against Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I think West Ham’s result against Man United, what a result that is,” said Redknapp. “To go there and get a win there, it’s never easy to get a result at Old Trafford.
On Man City draw: “Don’t worry, the Hammers are at home. They’ll take the beating.
“I like the West Ham-Man City game, I think it has the making of a great game. West Ham are in great form and they will give Man City a great game, that’s for sure.”
Given the form West Ham are in, then many might just back them to cause an upset.
All the pressure will be on Man City, with their star-studded and near £1bn squad to progress through to the next round.
But with a vocal East London crowd behind them, Mark Noble’s final season in Claret and Blue colours, then it might just be a dream swansong for the Hammers legend.
One thing is for sure, with West Ham starting well in Europe, doing well in the Premier League once again, and now in the next round of the EFL Cup after beating Manchester United.
It just seems as though the Hammers might just do something special in Noble’s final season at the club.
