Neil McCann has singled out Rangers right-back James Tavernier for praise for his role in tonight’s Europa League clash.
The Gers made it seven points from a possible nine in Europe with a dramatic 3-3 draw away to Benfica.
It was a rotten end to the night for Rangers – who conceded twice in the final 10 minutes against their 10-man hosts to settle for a point – but Alfredo Morelos became their all-time record goalscorer in European competition.
Morelos added a third for Steven Gerrard’s side just six minutes into the second half.
The Colombian connected with a fantastic teasing cross from his skipper Tavernier for what was his 22nd goal in 37 continental outings, eclipsing Ally McCoist.
Here’s how McCann reacted on BBC Sport: “Take a bow James Tavernier. It’s a wonderful run and cross. Credit to the official on that side becuase he is onside. Morelos is never going to miss from there.”
Tavernier does get a bit of stick, and has done from even some Rangers fans down the years.
But in terms of consistency, the 29-year-old right-back is truly exceptional and his assist on a stage like this, on a night like this, ought to remind his detractors of what he can and has done.
This wasn’t how the match was supposed to end after Morelos gave the visitors a two-goal cushion, with a man extra.
But Gerrard would’ve certainly taken a point before kickoff, though he will absolutely bulling right now.
