Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi spent this past season on loan at Union Berlin, but his future is now unclear.
The 23-year-old hit five goals and three assists for Union last season, but doesn’t look likely to return to the Bundesliga side.
Union sporting director Oliver Ruhnert has told Kicker that a new deal for Awoniyi is ‘anything but likely’, indicating that his future lies elsewhere.
“Nothing is ruled out, but in principle it is anything but likely,” said Awoniyi.
Liverpool stay still looks unlikely
Awoniyi may not be heading back to Union, but don’t expect to see him turning out for Liverpool either.
Yes, the Nigerian finally has a work permit to play in England after six years of waiting, but Liverpool seemingly plan to move him on.
Goal reported in May that whilst Jurgen Klopp will take a look at Awoniyi in pre-season, an £8million move to West Brom, Fulham or Stoke City could materialise.
Rangers’ interest a factor
One team linked with Awoniyi in recent times is Rangers, with 90Min claiming in January that Steven Gerrard is keen on raiding his former club.
Rangers have since signed Fashion Sakala, so a deal for another striker may not be a priority unless Alfredo Morelos leaves.
With Rangers interested though, Awoniyi is a name to keep an eye on as his future remains up in the air.
