Liverpool may be in the market for another striker in January, but they let an in-form goalscorer leave over the summer in Taiwo Awoniyi.

Now, nobody is saying that Liverpool made a mistake selling Awoniyi.

In fact, now he is in the Nigeria squad, Awoniyi really wouldn’t solve the problem of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Awoniyi is though thriving away from Liverpool. The Reds sold the striker to Union Berlin for £6.5million over the summer after six years on the books at Anfield.

Work permit issues were a problem throughout Awoniyi’s time at Liverpool. The 24-year-old went on seven different loan spells spanning Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the end, Liverpool decided to simply cash in over the summer. Right now, Awoniyi looks to have a new lease of life now he has a permanent home.

Awoniyi has hit eight goals in just 12 games this season. Last weekend, he hit a superb brace against former club Mainz to secure a 2-1 win.

The Nigerian is showing Liverpool what he can do – and has now talked about his Anfield exit.

All Nigeria Soccer covered Awoniyi’s press conference with Nigeria, and note that he discussed Liverpool.

Awoniyi called Liverpool a ‘great club’, but felt he had to leave for some stability after so many loan moves.

Awoniyi described the move to Union Berlin as an ‘easy decision’, and he seems to be loving life away from Liverpool.

Let’s hope Liverpool find another goalscorer of their own in 2022, possibly matching Awoniyi’s numbers in Germany.
