Losing Ben Brereton and replacing him with Jermain Defoe would show short-term thinking from Nottingham Forest.

According to the Nottingham Post, Brereton is set to leave Forest in the near future to join Blackburn Rovers.

The youngster is set to be let go by Aitor Karanka, with a more experienced replacement targeted.

Jermain Defoe is said to be on Forest’s wishlist, and at 36, he would be a very short term addition to their squad.

That makes the transfer plan look like a gamble for Forest, as if it goes wrong, they will have sold a youngster with plenty of growth to bring in a veteran who is in the twilight of his career.

However, if Defoe hits form, then he is clearly a better option than Brereton right now.

Defoe has the capabilities to fire Forest to promotion, with his finishing ability still phenomenal.

And Karanka obviously feels that it could be a gamble worth taking, as Forest try everything they can to get back into the Premier League.
