Swansea’s position shouldn’t put West Ham off Alfie Mawson, as Harry Maguire’s success at Leicester proves

West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing Alfie Mawson, despite Swansea City’s form in the Premier League this season.

West Ham already appear to be getting their plans in place for what will be a hugely important January transfer window for the Hammers as they look to secure Premier League survival – and, according to the Guardian, they have identified a key target in Alfie Mawson.

Mawson is enjoying only his second season at the highest level, having arrived at the Liberty Stadium from Barnsley in 2016, but is arguably one of the most impressive centre-backs at the highest level.

The Guardian reports that the Irons could offer £20 million for the 23-year-old, but that is unlikely to be enough to tempt the Swans into accepting a deal as they try and get the defender to agree a new contract.

With West Ham’s transfer record in recent years mixed at best, Hammers fans would certainly be forgiven for being sceptical about their pursuit – especially when they look at the Premier League table.

Swansea are currently bottom of the table and look to be in serious danger of being relegated to the Championship, and that may well leave some West Ham fans wondering therefore, whether targeting one of their important players is a good idea.

But the Hammers only need to look at Leicester City’s inspired £17 million deal to bring Harry Maguire to the King Power Stadium during the summer to see that Swansea’s league position should not put the Irons off a move.

Maguire was relegated with Hull last term, but has looked to be a brilliant addition for the Foxes and perhaps it may not be out of the question to suggest that Leicester may face a battle to hold onto him further down the line.

Rather than look at Swansea’s league position therefore, as a reason to not pursue Mawson, perhaps West Ham should look at the fact that the Swans could well be in serious danger of going down as a great opportunity to land a brilliant centre-back – with time to get even better – who may feel that a move to the London Stadium could present a chance to take his career to the next level.
