Oli McBurnie needs regular first-team football and Swansea City loaning the striker to Rangers could have big rewards.

There’s no stopping Oli McBurnie right now. The Swansea City youngster earned the Premier League 2 Player of the Year award last season after plundering 20 goals for the South Wales club’s Under-23s side.

And McBurnie is on track to comfortably shatter last season’s tally this time around. In between cameo appearances for Swansea’s senior side, the 21-year-old has found the time to net seven times in four games for the reserves – including an October hat-trick against Chelsea’s much-vaunted academy XI.

McBurnie could clearly benefit from more regular first-team football after seemingly outgrowing the academy pond. But, after the EFL ruled that the necessary paperwork had not been completed on time, a deadline day loan move to Championship side Barnsley fell through a week after the transfer window closed.

Though with January just two months away, Swansea’s priority must be to find a club willing to give the 6ft 2ins McBurnie further experience in senior football.

Well, how about Rangers. According to the Daily Record, the Scotland Under-21 ace is a boyhood Rangers fan and the Ibrox giants surely would not say no to a prolific young striker in the New Year.

After all, Alfredo Morelos’ goals have dried up lately while Eduardo Herrera, with just two in 12 games in all competitions, hasn’t exactly set the world alight.

Rangers benefitted immensely from signing a young Premier League talent on loan in the last January window, Emerson Hyndman making a real impact from Bournemouth. And McBurnie could be a similarly inspired addition, a low risk signing with the potential for huge rewards.

It’s a deal that would suit all parties. McBurnie would get some much-needed minutes, Rangers would get a hugely talented young striker and Swansea, if all goes to plan, would get a much-improved and matured striker back at the end of the season.
