Swansea City take on Crystal Palace this weekend in a must-win clash but how have they done against the Eagles in recent meetings?
Swansea City’s Kyle Bartley (L) and Crystal Palace’s Yannick Bolasie
Swansea City host Crystal Palace this weekend and Bob Bradley’s men need to take three points as they look to climb off the base of the Premier League table.
The Swans are currently five points from safety and a late concession against Everton last weekend means Bob Bradley is still without a win during his tenure in South Wales.
Swansea have an opportunity to close the gap on Saturday and Crystal Palace present perfect opponents. The Eagles are just five points above Swansea, one point clear of the dreaded drop zone.
Palace put on an improved showing last time out when they hosted high-flyers Manchester City. Pardrew’s men were narrowly beaten but there were certainly positives to take from the brave performance.
Bizarrely, Swansea City and Crystal Palace have only met 25 times and in the last five meetings, there has only been one win; those three points were taken by Crystal Palace.
The teams have an identical record with 10 wins each and five draws shared since their first meeting in 1920.
Let’s take a look at the three most recent meetings between the two clubs;
Swansea City 1-1 Crystal Palace – February 2016
Gylfi Sigurdsson puts Swansea in front with a fine free-kick
Once again it was a superb piece of individual brilliance from Gylfi Sigurdsson which put Swansea in front in this one.
The Icelandic midfielder has become known for his inch-perfect free-kicks and he made the most of that ability on this ocassion.
Scott Dann pulls Crystal Palace secures a point for Crystal Palace
The free-kick wasn’t enough to secure all three points though because Scott Dann was determined to ensure his team didn’t return to London empty-handed.
Dann’s close range finish from a corner was enough to secure a point for the Eagles.
Crystal Palace 0-0 Swansea City – December 2015
Frustration gets the better of Jack Cork and Yohan Cabaye as they clash in a goalless draw
This one won’t be remembered in a hurry, it was a frustrating evening at Selhurst Park and it seemed to get the better of Jack Cork and Yohan Cabaye (above).
It wasn’t all bad though, and this result made it six undefeated for Crystal Palace, their best run in the top flight since 1993.
Wilfried Zaha left frustrated in a goalless draw at Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace 1-0 Swansea City – May 2015
Current Cardiff City striker Marouane Chamakh puts Palace ahead
Crystal Palace secured three points on the final day of the 2014/15 season with the help of Marouane Chamakh’s close-range strike.
The win secured their 100th top flight home win with this result and secured them a top half finish in the Premier League, some achievment.
Swansea will have gone home disappointed with the narrow defeat but they certainly won’t have been disappointed with their season. The Swans finished 8th with the second highest points total in their history.
Marouane Chamakh celebrates the goal which secures all three points for the Eagles
