Swansea City manager Garry Monk claims that Ben Davies will go on to achieve great success with Tottenham Hotspur.
Swansea City manager Garry Monk has admitted that he did not rate Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies when he was younger.
Davies developed at Swansea’s youth academy and enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013-14, before earning a move to Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
The Wales international left-back had a slow start to life at Spurs, but he has now started the club’s last four Premier League games.
Monk believes that there is more to come from Davies, but admits that he is surprised by his progress.
“I have been amazed at Ben’s development in such a short space of time,” WalesOnline quotes Monk as saying. “I remember him as kid playing in reserves and, I’ll be 100 per cent honest, I didn’t think too much of him in terms of him being a star.
“I certainly never thought he’d be as good as he is now. But from the moment he came away on pre-season tour with us, and then starting the season after Neil Taylor’s injury, his transition was just incredible. How much he took on so quickly and at such a young age was amazing.
“In all my years I haven’t seen that happen with many young players at all and credit to him for that. His consistency was amazing and you have to that as a defender at the top level; to get that so quickly when you have never experienced any league football at any level was unbelievable.”
Davies was one of the best defenders in the Premier League last season, and he is beginning to show that form at Tottenham.
In five Premier League appearances, the Welsh youngster has created four chances, won 47% of the duels, and has a 84% pass accuracy.
The 21-year-old is likely to start for the North London outfit against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium later today, and one suspects that he will play a key role in deciding the outcome of the Premier League clash.
