BBC pundits Mark Lawrenson and Pat Nevin agreed that Swansea City deserved their 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.

A largely dull game was decided by second half goals from Jordan Ayew and Nathan Dyer, and allowed Carlos Carvalhal’s Premier League side to progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals at the expense of the Championship opponents he used to manage.

The Swansea boss did not have things his own way and Sheffield Wednesday arguably had the best of the first half, prompting Carvalhal to throw on Ayew and Martin Olsson.

It took just nine minutes for Ayew to make an impact, tapping in from close range after Tom Carroll’s long-range effort had rebounded back off both posts.

And the game was put to bed 10 minutes from time when Tammy Abraham fed Nathan Dyer, who fired through the legs of Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson looks on as prepares for the start of the npower Championship match between Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United at Loftus Road on May 7, 2011 in London, England.

Summarising for BBC One afterwards, Lawrenson, an FA Cup winner with Liverpool, said: “Yeah, I think [Swansea’s win was] fully deserved, second half especially. The quality of the play [after] the introduction of Ayew made all the difference between the two sides.

“They battled hard, Sheffield Wednesday, but over the 90-plus minutes [it was a] full deserved victory for Swansea.”

Over on BBC Radio Five Live, Nevin, who reached the final of the competition with Everton, added: “Yeah [Swansea] did enough, they shaded it and they were the better team on the night. As I say, shaded it, not much more than that.

“The changes the manager made at half-time made all the difference, I really thought it was a poor game in the first half. It was A) dull, but B) utterly lacking in quality, a little bit of quality added in the second half and Ayew changed that a little bit, and they deserved it.

“But it’s a long, long way to the final from here. Yeah it might only be three games, but it’s going to be three incredible games of a higher quality than this they’ll need to [get through] to win this cup.”
