Stan Collymore hopes Rhian Brewster made ‘the right calculations’ before he joined Sheffield United from Liverpool.
Several other clubs were credited with an interest in Brewster, who only played four times for Liverpool but impressed in a loan spell at Swansea last season.
But it was Sheffield United who won the race for his services, making the 20-year-old their club-record signing in the final days of the summer transfer window, at a reported cost of £23.4 million.
Brewster, though, has failed to find the net in his first five games for the Blades, who remain bottom of the Premier League table without a win to their name.
And writing in his column for The Daily Mirror this week (24 November, page 51), the former Liverpool and England striker, Collymore, said: “Let’s hope Rhian Brewster made the right calculations before choosing Sheffield United.
“Blades manager Chris Wilder has an abrasive but close relationship with a solid group of players and has worked wonders.
“But a young rookie on relatively big money, like Brewster can be swallowed up when things don’t go well. The club will expect him to be the difference, which is a big burden.
“That’s why it’s important youngsters find a football home instead of choosing the big-money deal first.”

Liverpool are said to have inserted a buy-back clause into the deal that took Brewster to Bramall Lane.
But the Under-17 World Cup winner still has some way to go if he is to convince his former club to bring him back to Anfield.
