Reports suggest that Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a £17m bid for Lazio defender Bastos; a huge mistake on the part of the Midlands club

According to a report in yesterday’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Wolverhampton Wanderers are preparing a €20 million (~£17 million) bid for Lazio’s Angolan centre-back Bastos.
The 27-year-old defender, who signed for Lazio from FK Rostov for £4.5 million in 2016, may seem like a quality defensive addition for the uninitiated. However, those who watch Serie A regularly will know exactly what to expect from Bastos.

On face value, Bastos is a strong passer of the ball and one who is not afraid to shy away from a tackle. However, he is not only inconsistent but lacks concentration; often at fault for Lazio conceding goals due to a lapse in judgement.
Furthermore, his discipline is poor and mistimed tackles mean that he picks up frequent bookings.
There is a reason Lazio are letting him go ahead of another important season; being that he is truly not up to scratch.

If Wolves cough up a figure of around £17 million for the defender, it is proof that the money the club has is getting to their heads.
At 27, he is close to playing at his full potential and if Wolves do choose to shop in Rome, they would be better off targeting 23-year-old Wallace.
