Why West Ham should be targeting Quincy Promes instead of Felipe Anderson

West Ham are reportedly nearing a deal for Lazio’s Felipe Anderson – but they should be looking elsewhere at Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes.

In what seems to have been dragging on for a while now, West Ham’s pursuit of Lazio’s Brazilian winger Felipe Anderson appears to be nearing a deal. Lazio president Claudio Lotito is doing everything in his power to get as much money as he can for the 25-year-old.

In a transfer that could end up being worth around £40 million, Anderson will certainly add flair and excitement to the Hammers’ side – yet there is the question as to whether or not he justifies his price-tag.

Especially when taken into consideration that Spartak Moscow’s 26-year-old Dutch winger Quincy Promes could be available for less.

The problem with Felipe Anderson revolves around decision making and consistency. When the Brazilian is at his best, he is a formidable threat; yet his best rarely shows and, when it does, it is often too late. He is quick to play short passes and sometimes suffers by making the wrong choice; losing possession.

Quincy Promes, on the other hand, has been a consistent threat ever since he moved to Spartak Moscow in 2014 – winning the Russian league’s ‘footballer of the year award’ in 2017 and scoring 58 goals in 109 league games.

Promes is a much more complete attacker; with the pace, physical abilities and technique required to succeed at a top level. Anderson, on the other hand, possesses the technical ability but may face being bullied off the ball in the Premier League. Promes’ strength should make him a more valuable asset than Anderson, especially when having to face defenders of the ilk of Harry Maguire, Antonio Rudiger and Michael Keane.

When Promes nearly completed a switch to Southampton in January, TalkSport reported that the Dutchman had a release clause of just £31 million in his contract. If this is to be believed, Promes would cost West Ham around £10 million less than Anderson will; with the Hammers getting a not necessarily better but more consistent player.
