Erik Sviatchenko is reportedly set to leave Celtic and Brendan Rodgers should land this available centre-back to replace him.
Brendan Rodgers could be about to wave goodbye to Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko as the Scottish Sun claim he is set to leave after making just two appearances all season.
The 26-year-old has been struggling with injury, leaving him way down the pecking order behind Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata, Kristoffer Ajer and any potential new signings Brendan Rodgers is likely to make.
With the five-time Denmark international set to leave, former Liverpool and Swansea City boss Rodgers will be on the lookout for a number of replacements as he closes in on RedBull Leipzig defender Marvin Compper.
He is still expected to add to his side in defence, even with the signing of Compper, especially if the Hoops lose Sviatchenko. That should see Rodgers’ attention turn towards the English Championship.
Mark Warburton’s former side Brentford are reportedly willing to sell Sviatchenko’s fellow countryman Andreas Bjelland in January, according to West London Sport, as the 29-year-old’s contract expires on June 30.
Bjelland, who has 28 caps, is a similar type of defender to Sviatchenko. A no-nonsense, old-fashioned type of defender that is dominant in the air but comfortable when in possession.
The only trait slightly lacking in Bjelland’s tool box is a lack of speed, but alongside the likes of Boyata, Simunovic and Ajer, he does not need such quickness.
Selling Sviatchenko and signing Bjelland could even see the Hoops make somewhat of a profit, as the latter is likely to be available on a cut-price deal from the west London side.
Experienced, strong and cheap, Bjelland would be the perfect replacement if his fellow countryman does indeed leave Glasgow next month.
