Erik Sviatchenko’s future at Celtic is in doubt after leaving the club on loan in January.
Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has told Danish outlet Bold that he remains a “Celtic player” despite being on loan with FC Midtjylland, but despite his latest comments, should Brendan Rodgers keep him?
The 26-year-old was shipped off to his former side in the January transfer window until the end of the season, with the Hoops boasting plenty of cover at centre-back in Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic, Kristoffer Ajer, Jack Hendry and Marvin Compper.
But the five-time Denmark international has impressed back in his home country, helping Midtjylland win nine of his 13 league and cup appearances and even scoring in an enthralling 3-2 win over FC Copenhagen.
Sviatchenko said: “I’m still a Celtic player, and I’m very happy that the team is doing well and that they have won the championship seven times in a row,” but does that mean Rodgers will keep the powerhouse defender?
The Daily Star claims Sviatchenko is currently earning a hefty £12,000 a week at Celtic Park, on a contract that still has two more years to run in Glasgow.
With Sviatchenko arguably Celtic’s sixth-choice centre-back, his wages are certainly way too high for a player that is on the fringes of first-team football.
Nir Bitton and Kieran Tierney have also shown they can provide cover at centre-back this season, lessening the need for Sviatchenko.
Rodgers should look to offload Sviatchenko in order to free up some cash for transfers of his own, but more importantly to shave a decent wedge off the wage bill this summer.
