Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata will play for Belgium at the World Cup.

Dedryck Boyata of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on April 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has suggested in The Daily Record that Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata could spark interest among clubs in England if he stars for Belgium against England and keeps Harry Kane quiet.

Boyata is part of the Belgium squad for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia this summer, while Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane will lead the line for the England at the competition.

Belgium and the Three Lions have been drawn in Group G, and former Celtic striker Sutton has suggested that 27-year-old centre-back Boyata – who costs the Hoops £1.5 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Manchester City in the summer of 2015, according to BBC Sport – could attract interest from clubs in England if he keeps Kane quiet.

Sutton wrote in The Daily Record: “Boyata though is now going into the shop window. I’m fully aware that even if Vincent Kompany does not make the Finals due to injury, the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld are likely to keep Boyata on the bench for the majority of the tournament.

“But if anything happens to them, Boyata might find himself starting – against England in the group match at the end of this month.

“Imagine he shackles Harry Kane and keeps a clean sheet as the Belgians win the game? With less than a year of his contract left to run at Parkhead, Boyata will surely have to be sold if he’s not going to commit and there would be English interest I’m sure if he was to star against Kane.”

Win-win situation for Celtic?

If Boyata does play well at the World Cup for Belgium, then it will be a win-win situation for Celtic.

Celtic will, of course, want their players to do well at major international tournaments, as the central defender will return to the Hoops on a high.

If there is interest in the former Manchester City centre-back after the World Cup, then Celtic can demand a decent transfer fee for his services.
