Chris Sutton admires Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart for declaring Antonio Colak as the better striker at Rangers over Alfredo Morelos. But he has sent a League Cup warning, too.

Stewart went on record earlier this week with his belief that Colak will pose a bigger threat to the Dons than Morelos. Rangers meet Aberdeen at Hampden Park in the semi-finals this Sunday. While both Gers forwards scored at Ibrox in their Premiership meeting in October.

“They are two completely different strikers,” Stewart stated, via Sky Sports. “I do rate one better than the other. I would say Colak is a better striker than Morelos… Just their all-round game. I have played against both of them and I can give my opinion on them.”

Colak drew Rangers level when Aberdeen visited Ibrox in October after Connor Barron put the Dons in front. John Lundstram, James Tavernier and Morelos – after replacing Colak in the 80th minute – then built the Gers an unbeatable lead under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Michael Beale only had Morelos to call on when Rangers visited Aberdeen in December as Colak recovered from a calf injury. It kept Van Bronckhorst’s £2m plus add-ons July signing from PAOK out for five league games. He also only watched from the bench against Celtic.

Sutton warns Stewart to back up his Colak over Morelos claims vs Rangers

Beale would finally start Colak in a Premiership fixture at Dundee United and afforded the 29-year-old 45 minutes. Morelos replaced the three-cap Croatian at half time having made way for Colak to start. Neither Gers forward found the back of the net during their 2-0 win.

Colak has scored 14 goals and assisted two through his 25 appearances in all competitions for Rangers. He has hit home 11 in 15 Premiership fixtures so far this season. Morelos has only scored five and created two over his 25 outings with each goal over 18 league games.

So, Stewart has reason to feel Colak will pose the greater threat for Rangers than Morelos against Aberdeen this Sunday. But Sutton has warned the Dons skipper that he must now back up his beliefs at Hampden. Otherwise, the Gers forwards may make him look foolish.

“I must say, I smiled when I saw Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart making it clear he thought Antonio Colak was better than Alfredo Morelos,” he wrote for the Daily Record.

“Honesty from players is what I want to hear and good on the Dons skipper for speaking his mind. However, he might end up with egg on his face if he doesn’t deliver at Hampden.”
