Chris Sutton has said on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:50pm, March 6, 2023) that Newcastle United could still finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season, pointing out that Eddie Howe’s side have a game in hand over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
The former Chelsea striker has said that despite Liverpool’s recent form and Newcastle’s struggles, we cannot write off the Magpies’ chances of finishing in the UEFA Champion League places.
Liverpool beat Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield in the league this past weekend.
The Merseyside club are now fifth in the Premier League table with 42 points from 25 matches.
Liverpool are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played 26 games.
Newcastle currently find themselves sixth with 41 points from 24 games.
Chris Sutton on Newcastle United and Liverpool top-four chances
Sutton said: “Newcastle have fallen away as well. We absolutely can’t rule them out of finishing in the top four.
“Just looking at the league table, they have a game in hand over Liverpool. If they win that game in hand, they will go above them.”

Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur battle
In our view, Liverpool are the favourites to clinch the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League table this season.
Arsenal and Manchester City are fighting for the league title, while Manchester United do appear set for the third spot – although, you never know the impact the 7-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool could have on them in the coming weeks.
Tottenham have a world-class manager in Antonio Conte, but they are a very inconsistent team.
Newcastle have been overachieving anyway with the squad they have got.
Liverpool have won four of their last five Premier League matches and are back in form.
And they have a very strong squad.
