Rangers suffered a 1-0 loss to Braga in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night in Portugal – and Chris Sutton has delivered his immediate reaction on Twitter. He has criticised Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Having beaten Braga away from home a couple of seasons ago thanks to a Ryan Kent-inspired performance – Rangers would have been hopeful. But the loss to Celtic, and the injury to Alfredo Morelos, made things harder.
Aaron Ramsey was dropped to the bench and remained there for the entire 90 minutes, as Abel Ruiz scored the only goal of the game for the Liga NOS side. Rangers improved towards the end of the second half.
Van Bronckhorst chose to keep Ramsey on the bench until the final whistle – as the Gers take a 1-0 loss back to Ibrox. Not a bad result, according to Celtic legend Sutton, but he questioned why the Welshman stayed on the bench.
Sutton on Rangers: Good result, but Ramsey should have come on
Ally McCoist summed it up in commentary. He stated that the Rangers midfielder must not have been 100% fit – to have been overlooked by the Ibrox gaffer. But if came through against Celtic unscathed, then why?
Rangers lacked midfielders bombing on, that creative touch. Joe Aribo provided some of that magic after coming off the bench. But Ramsey would have been ideal against a Braga side that did allow some gaps at times.
