Should Graeme Murty be in charge of Glasgow Rangers next season?

Rangers chairman Dave King has been hitting the headlines this week for his statement regarding the future of manager Graeme Murty.

In a statement released on Rangers’ official website, Ibrox chairman King praised the work Murty has done as the Gers’ manager.

The 62-year-old businessman, though, did not state whether or not Murty will remain in charge of Rangers next season, simply saying that the club will make the best possible appointment in the summer.

The timing of King’s statement was strange, as Rangers will face Old Firm rivals Celtic at Hampden Park in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has given his take on King’s statement, and so has Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd, who had two separate spells at Rangers, with both of them suggesting that it was to sell season tickets at Ibrox.

Sutton, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, wrote in The Daily Record: “His comments haven’t done Graeme Murty any favours.

“For him to come out and say that kind of stuff at the start of the week only cranks the pressure up on the man in charge.”

“King’s pandering to the punters​ and promising them a bright future,” added Sutton. “But this was the kind of statement you make the day after you lose the cup game, not the week before it.

“I know he’s trying to flog season tickets but there’s no need to create more uncertainty around the manager.”

Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun: “I don’t want to have a go at the Rangers chairman again but his statement earlier this week didn’t exactly give Murty a ringing endorsement, did it? But then he’s got season tickets to sell!

“King was always going to come out and say something about spending big money at this stage of the season to make the supporters put their hands into their pockets. Again.”

Murty has done well since he was handed the Rangers managerial role, and perhaps he should be given the chance next season.

With a full pre-season and the chance to make signings in the summer transfer window, Murty could build a team in his own image and have a proper go at challenging Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.
