Clinton Morrison has said on BBC Radio 5 Live (2:14pm, May 16, 2021) that Matt Doherty must be wondering about his position at Tottenham Hotspur after he was left out of the team against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Serge Aurier was injured for Tottenham’s Premier League game against Wolves at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon.

Spurs interim-manager Ryan Mason decided to use Japhet Tanganga at right-back, leaving Doherty on the substitutes’ bench.

Former Crystal Palace forward Morrison, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has said that Doherty must be wondering about his position at Spurs.

Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live (2:14pm, May 16, 2021): “What surprises me as well is Japhet Tanganga, I like him but Matt Doherty must be thinking I’ve left Wolves to play first team football at Spurs and at the moment their first choice Serge Aurier is injured, looks like Tanganga is second choice so where does that leave Doherty?”

Doherty joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Wolves last summer for a transfer fee reported by The London Evening Standard to be worth £15 million.

The right-back has not been a regular in the first team and has made only 12 starts in the Premier League this season.

The 29-year-old has not exactly been great at Spurs, as he was used to a different system at Wolves.

It must be a bitter blow to Doherty to see Tanganga ahead of him in the pecking order under Tottenham interim-manager Mason.

There are only two more matches left for Spurs this season, and Doherty should wait to see who becomes the new manager before making a decision on his future.
