Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter with Conor Gallagher in mind, after Chelsea announced the signing of Saúl Ñíguez from Atlético Madrid.
What’s the story?
Well, the Blues have signed the Spain international on a season-long loan, adding another midfielder to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Saúl joins Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in Chelsea’s midfield pecking order.
Seeing as Tuchel usually operates with a two-man midfield in a 3-4-2-1 shape with wing-backs, there’s huge competition between those seven players.
As a result, some Crystal Palace fans have started to believe there’s a chance of signing Gallagher permanently next summer.
The 21-year-old has began his season-long loan in SE25 on fire, scoring twice in the 2-2 draw against West Ham on Saturday.
Can Crystal Palace sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea?
In our view, there’s a good chance of this happening.
Gallagher, along with Billy Gilmour, will return to west London in 2022 with their pathway to the starting XI blocked by world-class stars.
Depending on how much Gallagher enjoys his stint at Selhurst Park, a move could easily happen if he pushes for the deal and helps to facilitate it.
Even if he doesn’t push for it, Chelsea should recognise that their midfield is bloated for the system Tuchel wants to play and invite offers for the England Under-21 sensation.
However, much of this hinges on Saúl making his move to Stamford Bridge permanent.
If that doesn’t happen, the Selhurst Park faithful could sadly experience another Ruben Loftus-Cheek situation all over again.
