The Tottenham Hotspur right-back was impressive against Brighton and Hove Albion and his pace could be vital this weekend.
While Serge Aurier has taken time to settle at Tottenham Hotspur, the summer signing had arguably his best game in a Spurs shirt on Wednesday evening, scoring a (albeit lucky) goal against Brighton and Hove Albion and impressing with his all-round play.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has a habit of switching his full-back options from game to game, with Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier expected by many to step in when Spurs face the runaway league leaders, yet Aurier deserves to keep his place.
Trippier has not been at his best in recent weeks and, while he can be erratic, the Ivory Coast international’s latest showing suggests he is ready to knuckle down and prove his worth in North London.
He will not want to be sitting unused on the bench in one of Tottenham’s biggest matches of the domestic season, and his performance against Brighton was an emphatic example of that.
Pochettino need not rotate his full-backs every few days, with the likes of Aurier and Rose more than capable of racking up appearances in quick succession, and the Argentine should be picking players who justify their inclusion, not simply opting for a midweek side and a weekend team.
It will be interesting to see who Tottenham pick for the match against Pep Guardiola’s men, with a Spurs victory not beyond the realms of possibility if they get it right.
