The midfielder is all set to be released by Rangers after a difficult time in Glasgow.

The Rangers career of Joey Barton appears to be coming to an end and the midfielder has been linked with plenty of English clubs since that became clear.

The controversial midfielder was suspended by the club in September after a bust-up with Andy Halliday and his differences with the club have not been patched up. A mutual termination is in the works.

One team that has, in the past, been heavily linked with Barton’s signature is Leeds United.

Now the Yorkshire club is being linked with his signature yet again.

According to the Herald Scotland Leeds are interested in signing Barton and Garry Monk is considering his potential signature to help them in their pursuit of a play-off spot.

Of course, whilst Barton is a decent player, who was one of the best in the Championship with Burnley last season, Leeds fans will be apprehensive of this news.

Firstly, Leeds have plenty of central midfield options already. With the young talent of Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira coming through the likes of Toumani Diagouraga and Luke Murphy can’t get a game.

Secondly, Monk has previously stated that he does not want players with big egos at the club – Barton would not fit that bill.

His signature would therefore be a surprise and Leeds fans will likely take the report with a pinch of salt.
