Leeds United have been dealt a blow with back-up goalkeeper Marco Silvestri sustaining an injury which appears set to rule him out for the rest of the season.

The Italian has undergone surgery on a knee injury, meaning Garry Monk will have to pick a player he never has done before to provide cover for 36-year-old Rob Green.

His options are Bailey Peacock Farrell, the academy goalkeeper with one first team appearance to his name, who suffered a fractured hand earlier this season, or veteran Ross Turnbull who has not played since 2015.

Turnbull was signed from Barnsley in 2015, with Premier League experience behind him. He even has a Champions League medal in his collection from a spell as a Chelsea back-up.

The 32-year-old featured in the League Cup against Doncaster early into his spell at Leeds, but an injury ruled him out of the rest of the season.

This year he has not featured at all, sitting as a fourth choice option, and it is a surprise that he has remained at the club.

His contract is set to expire this summer, but Turnbull is one step closer to the first team as a result of Silvestri’s injury.

Should anything happen to Rob Green in the play-offs, an injury or suspension, Garry Monk will have a big decision to make.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell is thought to have the edge, but in a crucial play-off final would the 20-year-old be trusted, or would Monk defer to the veteran?
