It had seemed sure that Manchester City would sell Dzeko- now they may reconsider.
The Bosnian striker proved his worth by inspiring City’s title winning comeback against QPR – ensuring his name will live forever in the City history books.
Sergio Aguero may have got the headline grabbing winner, but without Dzeko’s headed equaliser, City may just have blown it.
Dzeko was signed in January last year for £27 million, and after initially taking time to adjust to the Premier League, began the season in searing form.
His four goal performance at White Hart Lane in August was unstoppable; and throughout the season he has chipped in with vital goals.
Since the turn of the New Year he has found it difficult to hold down a first team spot, and has perfectly fulfilled the role of a ‘squad striker’.
However his lack of starts had led many to expect that the exit door is looming, and there would be no shortage of takers.
If Dzeko is prepared to continue being patient and take his share of chances, City should keep him.
The Premier League season is a long one, 38 games, and then factor in the Champions League, Carling Cup, and FA Cup.
Top clubs need a number of quality strikers, in case of injury – but equally so to keep others on their toes and to mix it up.
Most at risk of a summer sale should be Carlos Tevez, and Mario Balotelli, if Roberto Mancini decides he is not worth the hassle.
The best thing about Edin Dzeko compared to City’s other strikers, is that he offers something different.
His physical presence is in contrast to Aguero’s silky style, and he was able to break down QPR’s battling back line when initially the others cannot.
Football is a tactical game, and teams need to have different ideas in their locker to defeat the opposition. Variety in attack is just that, and it is City’s biggest strength; which has led to them winning the title on goal difference.
The big dilemma for City is how they move on. Dzeko and his 19 goals deserves a chance to be a part of it, but if he wants guaranteed regular starts, he will need to be more consistent, or look for a move elsewhere.
The club are reported to be looking at Gonzalo Higuain, and also have John Guidetti to come back from his loan at Feyenoord.
How they move on will not necessarily be as big a task as winning the league in the first place, but Mancini may find it every bit as tricky, and it will be best looked at once the emotion and joy has been savoured, and the dust begins to settle.
