Kemar Roofe remains Leeds’ top goalscorer this season, despite his injury woes.
When owner Andrea Radrizzani took over at Leeds United, the Italian’s fundamental ethos at Elland Road was to improve year upon year. But this season, the Yorkshire giants have gone backwards.
The risky appointment of Thomas Christiansen backfired, while the underwhelming appointment of Paul Heckingbottom has turned out to be just that – winning two of his 11 games in charge.
But a rare shining light, and indeed the best example of progression this season, has been the form of Kemar Roofe. He remains at the top of the goalscoring charts with 12 in all competitions, two ahead of Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Signed by Garry Monk for a fee of £3million, 25-year-old Roofe has impressed when given the chance to shine. Injury has limited the former West Bromwich Albion star to just 22 Championship appearances, though.
Leeds handed out a number of contracts in the summer, with the likes of Eunan O’Kane, Gaetano Berardi, Pontus Jansson and Stuart Dallas all putting pen to paper, but Roofe remains on the four-year deal he signed in the summer of 2016.
But as top goalscorer, Roofe surely deserves to be earning more than the tiny £6,000-a-week wage he currently receives every month, according to the Daily Star.
That is less than half of what teammate Lasogga is currently earning at Elland Road, with Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Phil Hay claiming the powerful German pockets £15,000 a week.
Leeds need to offer Roofe a new deal before other clubs become aware of his miniscule pay packet and look to tempt him with a move away and a more lucrative deal.
