Gamboa has enjoyed somewhat of a revival at Celtic this season.

Brendan Rodgers has a number of decisions to make on the future of his Celtic squad between now and January, as nine players are set to see their contracts expire next summer – including Cristian Gamboa.

Captain Scott Brown has already suggested that he is set to sign a new deal with the Hoops in the coming weeks, but eight others could find themselves on the chopping block if Rodgers does not act quickly.

Bosman rules state that non-Scottish clubs can look to sign players from Scotland on a pre-contract basis if their contracts expire next summer from January 1.

Dedryck Boyata, Mikael Lustig, James Forrest, Ryan Christie, Emilio Izaguirre, Scott Allan and Dorus de Vries all join Brown and Gamboa in the final months of their Celtic contract.

The Daily Star claim Gamboa, 28, currently earns a whopping £15,000 a week at Parkhead, after he joined the Hoops in Rodgers’ first summer as manager from West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £1million (Scottish Herald).

The Costa Rica international has enjoyed somewhat of a revival this season after managing only three appearances last season. He has already eclipsed that total this time around, playing four times.

He starred in both legs against Rosenborg in Champions League qualifying as well as playing in the first leg against Suduva, before supplying to assists in the 3-1 League Cup win over Partick Thistle.

Gamboa remains back-up on the right side of defence to Sweden international Lustig, and he is likely to be seen as expendable. Surely, then, the only way for Gamboa to earn a new deal at Celtic is by taking a pay cut.

At £15,000 a week, Gamboa is likely to be one of the higher earners. But if he is to stay, accepting a smaller contract is likely to be his only choice if he wants to remain at Celtic.
