Silly Season seems to be in overdrive as Celtic find themselves linked with a player who’d cost them millions in salary.
It was only Friday when Celtic boss Neil Lennon told The Glasgow Evening Times that he’s actively trying to sign players – providing it’s financially feasible for the Hoops.
Lennon said: “We are working very hard to find the right quality of player within our wage bracket to make us better.”
With that in mind, you could forgive the Celtic manager if he’s bemused and perplexed by speculation about a certain Emmanuel Adebayor.
According to The Sun, the Bhoys are interested in signing the former Arsenal and Manchester City striker, but it looks like this might be a prime example as to why the summer transfer window is often referred to as ‘silly season’.
Yes, Celtic need a striker and yes, he’s available on a Bosman, so it would be financially feasible in that regard.
Thing is, Adebayor used to earn £160,000 per week in the Premier League [The Mirror] and although he undoubtedly had to accept a wage cut at İstanbul Basaksehir, his most recent club, he’d have to take yet another one to play for the Scottish Premiership champions.
Even on a short-term deal, Adebayor, who scored 97 Premier League goals in 242 appearances, would cost millions in salary alone and he just doesn’t fit into the ‘wage bracket’ that Lennon referred to on Friday.
Plus, one goal in 12 games for Crystal Palace, the last of four English clubs he represented, indicates that he’s a declining force and even if Lennon wanted him, he should steer well clear for that reason, too.
