Surely Ajer should secure loan move if Celtic sign Compper?

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing veteran defender Marvin Compper.

Brendan Rodgers is on the lookout for a new centre-back at Celtic ahead of the January transfer window and has been linked with a move for German defender Marvin Compper.

German magazine Kicker claim the Hoops are interested in landing the 32-year-old defender, who has fallen down the pecking order at Bundesliga title hopefuls RedBull Leipzig after first joining the ambitious side in 2014.

Rodgers will be looking to add a defender with a bit of experience ahead of a Europa League campaign after Christmas that sees the Bhoys enter the knockout phase in the round of 32.

Erik Sviatchenko remains injury prone, which has seen the 26-year-old fail to feature since August – making two appearances throughout the entire 2017-18 campaign. Nir Bitton is out of position, while Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic continue to inadvertently prove that they are capable of a blunder.

However, the quartet remain above 19-year-old Kristoffer Ajer in the pecking order despite the Norwegian’s impressive loan spell at Kilmarnock last season.

The 6ft 4in giant was Rodgers’ first signing at Celtic Park, but has been afforded just seven appearances in all competitions this season and is way down the pecking order behind Celtic’s four first-choice central defenders.

Adding one-time Germany international Compper to the Hoops squad will see Ajer’s chances of first-team football become almost impossible, with Rodgers looking to field his best available players to progress in the Europa League and fend off the competition of Rangers.

That should convince both Celtic and Ajer that a loan move away from the club in the January transfer window is a deal that would suit all parties involved.

Allowing him to develop and become a better player with first-team football, or indeed interest clubs over a permanent transfer with his performances while on loan, will see Celtic either benefit with an improving future prospect or a tidy transfer fee.
