Jamie Redknapp is not convinced Memphis Depay can step it up from the Eredivisie, citing a Liverpool failure as an example.
Memphis Depay is set up to be a big success at Manchester United, but Jamie Redknapp has warned the winger may not flourish.
Writing in The Mail, Redknapp has compared Depay to another former Dutch hope who once impressed in the Eredivisie, but could not translate that success to the Premier League, citing ex-Liverpool attacker Ryan Babel.
He said: “He certainly looks like he rates himself and while I am all for confidence, he needs to deliver. Is he another RVP, or another Ryan Babel, who came to Liverpool with promise and confidence but couldn’t hack it?”
Depay dazzled last season, scoring a stunning 22 goals in 30 games to lead PSV to the Eredivisie title.
Babel was nowhere near a prolific a goalscorer at Ajax, with five goals in 27 games his best return.
Liverpool knew they were signing a project when they snapped him up, while United are hoping Depay is closer to the finished article.
Depay also has the advantage of playing under Louis van Gaal, a manager who knows him already from the Dutch international set up, and can help him kick on in the Premier League, providing there is not too much expectation placed upon him after Angel di Maria’s exit.
