Jurgen Klopp has signed his new contract at Liverpool, and the German will now be staying until at least 2026.

The Liverpool boss has cited a number of reasons as to why he decided to stay at the club, including persuasion from his wife Ulla, but in our view, there’s one Liverpool player who may have convinced Klopp he has to stay – Luis Diaz.

Indeed, a lot has been made about the fact that Klopp is staying due to the fact he feels re-energised at Anfield, and you have to feel that Diaz is the player that has injected that energy into Klopp.

Before Diaz’s arrival, it felt as though the end of an era was looming at Liverpool. Key players such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are all entering their 30s, and that 2024 contract expiry date looked like a good time for Klopp to close this chapter.

However, the signing of Diaz has not only improved Liverpool’s long-term prospects, it’s proven that Klopp has the personal backing of his board.

As the story goes, Klopp personally asked for the signing of Diaz in January, and despite their flaws, FSG were more than happy to push that signing through.

Bringing in Diaz has shown Klopp that another rebuild is possible, Liverpool are a club that are ready to go again past this current golden generation, and the fact that he’s hit the ground running has proven that there doesn’t need to be a lull in quality for that to happen.

This Liverpool squad will look very different by the time 2026 comes around, there’s no doubt about that, but the signing of the ‘superb’ winger has shown that the future will be bright at Anfield.
