
Jonjo Shelvey was probably Newcastle United’s best player on an otherwise disappointing night against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies lost 3-1 to Spurs at St James’s Park but the result could and probably should have been a little different for the hosts.
In the first half, Shelvey was pulling strings in Newcastle’s midfield and could have had a couple of assists under his belt by the half-time break.
First, the former Liverpool midfielder found Dwight Gayle with a brilliant curling pass on 21 minutes, before sending another delicious cross in for Gayle to miss just before the half ended, after Son Heung-min opened the scoring.
Shelvey, who has been performing consistently well for United for much of the season, also could have scored himself but sent a header over the bar.
He was similarly influential in the second half but a little less so, with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho seemingly addressing the freedom he was getting and stifled him somewhat.
