Former Spurs player Jamie Redknapp has suggested there is one area which could let Younes Kaboul down this season.
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has praised Younes Kaboul’s performance in the North London derby but has suggested an area which can let the Frenchman down.
Kaboul was superb in a defence, which took a lot of pressure against Arsenal as Tottenham held out for a point at the Emirates in a match they may well have gone on to lose in the past.
“Younes Kaboul also deserves credit. I was speaking to Sol Campbell in the Sky studio and we agreed he’s got all the attributes to be a top defender, but concentration can let him down. Saturday was the best I’ve seen him play in a long time,” wrote Redknapp for the Daily Mail.
Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to hand Kaboul the Tottenham Hotspur captaincy certainly caused a few raised eyebrows with Belgian Jan Vertonghen tipped to take the role.
However, if there was any element of complacency or a lack of concentration from Kaboul, the responsibility of being Tottenham’s captain should be enough to prevent that from being a problem this season.
Kaboul has all of the necessary attributes to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season; he’s quick, he’s strong and he’s good in the air and on the ground.
The trick for him and his boss is to find that consistency while managing the extra responsibility of being captain.
It’s also important for his consistency and momentum that he’s able to stay fit this season.
It would be extremely difficult for Kaboul to maintain the sort of form he showed against Arsenal if some of his fitness problems from the past start to creep back in, preventing him from making progress and moving forward.
Tottenham are enduring one of their most important recent seasons and Kaboul should be looking to lead by example and prove that small Redknapp criticism wrong by the end of the campaign.
