Jose Mourinho has told Sky Sports (27/09/20 at 4:10 pm) that Steve Bruce would have been ‘super happy’ that Newcastle were only 1-0 down at half-time during their clash against Tottenham yesterday.
Spurs hit the woodwork and Karl Darlow was forced to pull off a number of high-quality saves to ensure that the likes of Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane didn’t add more goals to their one-goal tally after 45 minutes.
In the second half, Newcastle’s man between the sticks was busy again, but he did enough to keep his side in the game as Bruce’s men scored a controversial penalty in stoppage-time to secure a point.
After the game, Mourinho claimed that the ‘very intelligent’ Bruce would have been pleased with the scoreline during the break.
“It’s not for me to judge their [Newcastle’s] performance,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “They did their job the best they could.
“I think at half-time Bruce was super happy with the result 1-0. He’s a very intelligent guy and a very experienced guy. A good friend. He knows football up and down.
“He knew at half-time that it could be 3 or 4-0, so he was very happy at half-time. And they got their point.”

Tottenham should have buried the game in the first 45 minutes, but Darlow in between the sticks, the woodwork and a lack of cutting edge allowed the away team to stay in the game.
That resulted in perhaps the most controversial moment of the season so far when Eric Dier was penalised for a handball in stoppage-time.
Andy Carroll, who was behind Dier, headed the ball towards goal from the edge of the area and it hit the Tottenham man’s right arm as he jumped up.
Dier didn’t see the ball, he didn’t have much time to react and he couldn’t do anything about his right arm being in the position it was. But with football today, that’s seemingly handball, which is clearly ruining the enjoyment of the game.
