Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain has already confirmed that Moyes will not have much money to spend in January, meaning Barton could be one of the most talented players available to them.
The Black Cats are currently in 18th place in the Premier League table, and Moyes has already gone on record to state that he intends to strengthen in the upcoming transfer window.
