The left-back is now thriving at Chelsea and chasing the Premier League title.
Chelsea drew 1-1 with Burnley in the Premier League today, as their march toward the Premier League title goes on.
Coming away with a point from Turf Moor is something of an achievement these days and Tottenham’s loss against Liverpool means Chelsea are still well placed.
Once again they had Marcos Alonso to thank for their goal. The Spanish wing-back scored again, his second in a row, to take his tally to five for the season.
Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso celebrates after the game
His performances have been brilliant for Chelsea since his arrival from Fiorentina in the summer and one set of supporters are shaking their heads at his form.
Those supporters will be Sunderland ones.
Alonso joined Sunderland on loan from Fiorentina in 2014 and played an important role in their survival in the Premier League.
After 20 appearances for the club they had an option to buy Alonso outright from La Viola. Sunderland, according to the Chronicle.

But the deal became protracted and an offer of £2 million plus Modibo Diakite did little to stir up Fiorentina’s will to sell.
Fiorentina kept hold of the player, who Goal report could have been Sunderland’s for just £5 million, and reaped the rewards with his lucrative sale to Chelsea.
Now Sunderland fans can only watch on, as one of their 2014 heroes drives on for the Premier League title.
