Ross McCormack was denied the chance to swap Aston Villa for Sunderland on deadline day but could still make a move.

Ross McCormack had probably hoped to put his disastrous 2016/17 season behind him heading into the new campaign. However, the misfit striker is still stuck at Aston Villa after failing to secure a move away on transfer deadline-day.

Sunderland, managed by his former Leeds United boss Simon Grayson, had been hoping to take McCormack on loan but his wage demands scuppered a move, as reported by The Guardian.

Now, the 30-year-old faces spending the next few months out of action with unimpressed Villa boss Steve Bruce unwilling to let him back in the first-team fold. Therefore, McCormack’s only hope of an escape is with a shock move to Turkey, where the transfer window does not close until Friday.

Fortunately, The Mail reports that such a switch may be on the cards with Fenerbahce making contact over a potential season-long loan move.

Fener want cover for veteran striker Robin Van Persie and are considering Everton outcast Oumar Niasse (below) as well as Atletico Madrid’s Luciano Vietto.

The move would surely benefit all parties, with McCormack getting the chance to play regular first-team football and rediscover the form that earned him that £12 million move from Fulham to Villa last summer, per the BBC.

Furthermore, Villa would surely jump at the chance to get McCormack off the wage bill for the time being.

However, you can’t help feel that a switch to Sunderland could have been the best possible move for McCormack. The Black Cats need a reliable goalscorer to ensure they don’t stray towards the bottom end of the table and Grayson could get the best out of a player who shone under his tutelage at Leeds.
