The Sunderland forward is said to have attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Southampton.
Any hope had by Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Southampton of a bargain deal for Sunderland’s Josh Maja looks to be fading fast.
The Premier League trio are among the clubs keen on Maja, according to the Daily Mirror.
But Sky Sports reports that after positive talks between the Sunderland player and owner, Stewart Donald, the League One side are close to agreeing a new contract with Maja, and hope to make an announcement ‘in due course’.
The 19-year-old has scored or assisted 11 goals in 14 league matches this season, but is well into the final year of his contract.
Both of those things go some way to explaining the apparent interest from Tottenham, Manchester City – one of Maja’s former clubs – and Southampton.
But if Sunderland can indeed tie down Maja ahead of the January transfer window, any remaining suitors would be required to pay a fee more representative of the player’s ability and potential.
Fabian Delph (now Manchester City), Ademola Lookman (Everton) and Dele Alli (Tottenham) are among those to have been sold by League One clubs to those in the Premier League throughout their teenage years – each of whom attracted a fee in excess of £5 million.
